Michael Huber was a criminal!!! He murdered my great, great grandmother, Rufina Reuschmann (Scholastica's mother), and did four years for manslaughter in the Kingston Pen. She was 68 years old. He struck her with a piece of wood when he was drunk. I have the whole story, which appeared in the Berlin newspaper, the Deutscher Canadier, July 20, 1849. Here is the english translation: "An unfortunate affair took place last Wednesday in Wellesley Township, not far from the Catholic church, whereby a man, Michael Huber by name, a brick-layer by trade, took the life of his old mother-inlaw as the result of an unfortunate blow. At the coroner’s examination, carried out the following day by Dr. Scott, it was indicated and testified that Huber had for some time been a slave to drink and behaved like a true monster toward his family. That’s the way it was on this day as well, as he drove his wife, children and mother-in-law out of the house several times. The old lady, towards evening, locked up the whiskey jug in her own chest, whereupon he grabbed the axe and broke the chest open; she then stormed into the house again to save her chest. He chased her out again, and threw a log at her with all his strength. He struck her with it with such force on the head above the ear, that her skull was split open and this led to her death eight or nine hours later." Terry Graff graffterry@hotmail.com

Dear HInsberger,
I am a direct descendant of Sebastian Graf. He is my great, great grandfather. His son Romanus is my great grandfather and Michael Graf's brother. Romanus' son was Joseph (my grandfather and my dad Elmer's father).
I have a photograh of Romanus and his sister Theresa. It seems Romanus, Michael, and Theresa moved from Ontario to North Dakota. Romanus moved back after two years; Theresa moved to Manitoba and then to Saskatchewan with her family. My records also show that Michael was married to Madalena (Lena) Reich (Rich), had 14 children, and died a tragic death in Langdon, North Dakota. It seems he stepped in front of a team of run-away horses, only to have a wooden stake driven through his chest.
I also have photographs of Michael's sisters Catherine and Rufina and their families.
Do you have any other information about Michael and his family? Do you have a photograph of Michael?
Best,
Terry Graff

I have Hubers in my family who came from Enchenberg, Prov. Lorrain, France, in 1835-6. Since Alsace & Lorrain were part of Germany off and on until 1917, there is a possible connection. I will email him and give him this site. You never know......
Sebastian Graf's son Michael married Magdelena Rich.
She was my great aunt.

This is just a brief comment now, and I'll write more, later. I think there's a connection between the Hubers and the Leichtnams, as is hinted in the Drouar genealogy. I know the Hubers (and Hoovers) originally came from Switzerland, (north of Bern, I think), while the Leichtnams originally came from Breidenbach and Olsberg, in the Moselle Dept. of Lorraine. However, there were Hubers living close to Leichtnams at Festina, Iowa, (Winneshiek County), in pioneer days. Those Hubers originally came from Canton Aargau, of Switzerland. Francois Leichtnam, The original settler of that family who lived at Festina, was born at Olsberg about 1786, and when he came to America about 1844 he settled first in Erie County, New York, near Buffalo. From Erie County, at the western end of the Erie Canal, one could either cross Lake Ontario to Canada, or go west to Iowa. I think in the 1830s and 1840s, people from Erie County probably went to Ontario, but after 1850 they went west to Iowa, as my Leichtnams did. I'm interested in helping to do a complete genealogy of the Leichtnams. There are probably not much more than 100 phone listings for that name in the whole USA, even though a lot of the Canadian ones have moved to Wisconsin & Michigan. The number in France is much less than 100, in Germany there aren't many more than a dozen, and in Switzerland, I think, a half-dozen. I have been in touch with Jose Leichtnam, a retired General of the French Air Force, who seems interested in such a project, and Philippe Leichtnam, a Captain in the French Navy, who is interested in it, also. My e-mail address is: glbaker50613@yahoo.com I live in Cedar Falls, Iowa, USA, and have some Canadian ancestors, of the Alsatian "Schaub" Family, which was originally Swiss, many centuries ago.

I am so glad I found your site, what a wonderful job you have done. I also have a Huber connection. My Huber family was located mostly in Monroe Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey and Berlin Township, Camden County, New Jersey. My Mother was Mary Elizabeth Huber, daughter of Charles Franklin Huber and Granddaughter of Michael Huber. If anyone has a connection to this Huber family, I would love to hear from you. I enjoyed reading your Huber/Hoover/Huver family history so much. What a fantastic job you have done with all this information. I am married to Richard M Huver, son of Marvin J.,grandson of Noah, greatgrandson of Bernard & Catherine Huver and great, great grandson of Ludwig. Our daughter Patti Schafer emailed your site to me so we could check it out. Dick goes fishing in Canada so when he reads all this I'll bet he will want to visit your home town in the future. Thanks so much, Jean Huver and my email address is jhuv1@aol.com

Your site is awesome! I am a descendent of Ludwig Huber, through his son Bernard, his son Noah, his son Marvin, his son Richard. I have been researching the Hubers for about 6 years. I didn't have all Ludwig's children's names, but knew there were more than the 4 I had, because of the birth date differences. I will pass this on to my dad, Richard, as he will be thrilled! I thank Lorraine for giving me your site to peek at. Patti (Huver) Schafer, Michigan

Robert: The last time I wrote was over two years ago, on my mother's (a Keiswetter) birthday. I just saw my original post. My name is M. (Mary) Therese Carey. My mother is Josephine Elizabeth Keiswetter Carey and her father was Joseph Bernard Keisetter. His father died in Detroit, MI in 1894 or 1895. He was working at his uncle's grocery. I've moved from Playa Del Rey to Chicago, IL. This coming weekend, I'm driving to Toronto to enjoy the "open Doors" weekend. I have the farm address, and I hope to have the opportunity to say hello. My new work email (I have a Blackberry) is tcarey@winston.com. I hope to meet you and Lorraine soon.

Further to my message of August 18 - I live in Ottawa but grew up in a small town in Northern Ontario, Virginiatown. My father was George Oehring, son of Philip Joseph Oehring and Mathilda Meyer. Dad was born in Formosa but was raised in Hanover. His grandparents were Philip Oehring and Anna Margaretha Hesterman. The information that I have shows Mary Ann Graf as his second wife. Christine de Schneider (Oehring)
Interesting. I believe Sebastian, Scholastica's brother, was the father of my great-grandfather, Philip Oehring's first wife , Mary-Ann Graf. Do you know anything about the Oehrings? They were around Formosa, Hanover, Maryhill areas. Christine de Schneider (Oehring)
Compiling several KUNTZ families, Also Meyers, Freiburgers & Forwells. Might be able to help with these lines and always looking for new info. Traced my Kuntz line to 1746 in Daisbach, Zuzenhausen, Baden, Germany. Harvey Kuntz, St. Clements, Ont.
Have drifted into your Huber history with all the Brenner info and say "Thank You" for filling in a number of blank. My great grandfather was a younger brother of Elizabeth Busch who married Henry Brenner. In this site, I also found many extensions of my "Ertel Family" through the Kieswetter clan. Bereathe Ertel Thompson
Would you please submit your location. It would mean much more to the readers of this page.
TO ALL: If you feel comfortable leaving your email address with your comments others that are searching for family can contact you.
Thank You

If it wasn't for your website, I wouldn't have found Rufina Huber Kieswetter's family. My name is M. (Mary) Therese Carey. My mother is a Kieswetter (although it was changed to Keiswetter in the late 1890s-1900s). Her name is Josephine Elizabeth Keiswetter Carey. Her father was Joseph Bernard Keiswetter, son of Joseph Anton Kieswetter, the fifth child of Rufina Huber Kieswetter & John M. Kieswetter. I initially found Rufina Huber through the family history library while searching for Kieswetters. My grandfather's sister was named Rufina and that unusual name was the thin thread that led me to you. I'm very excited to find you. My mother, her siblings and their offspring are still in the Great Lakes area. I will be in touch with Rufina Huber's branch of your family tree and the rest of the information that I have. Hi Robert, I want you to know that you are doing a great job on the Genealogy. I wouldn't know where to start. We have realatives in common. My Great Aunt, Anna Buchheit, was married to Simon Huber.(Number 23 in the Genealogy) My Mother always wondered if there was any relationship between George's family and our family. Simon and Anna's daughter Rita (Schnarr) and my Mother were very good friends as well as being First Cousins. It's a small world. Keep up the good work. Julianne Lehmann Cambridge, Ontario
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ROBERT! I AM SURE IT WILL BE APPRECIATED BY MANY! COUSIN LORRAINE
